Death row inmate Taberon Dave Honie is appealing his conviction, sentence and post-conviction judgment for sexually mutilating and murdering his ex-girlfriend’s mother. Honie was convicted and sentenced by a judge to die by lethal injection for the July 9, 1999 slaying of Paiute substance-abuse counselor Claudia Benn near Cedar City.
The victim was bitten, beaten, sexually assaulted and her throat had been cut four times. Honie walked out of the home covered in blood from his elbows to his fingertips. “I killed her,” Honie said to police. “I stabbed her with a knife.”
Assistant Attorney General Thomas Brunker will argue against Honie’s appeal that claims his trial attorney was ineffective.
